Learning the Chuck-A-Luck rules is not too difficult as you watch the dice tumble inside what seems to be a birdcage. This game of chance, also recognized as Birdcage, uses three dice to play. The game is believed to be copied from the game Grand Hazard. Grand Hazard and Chuck-A-Luck are considered by many expert as variant of the well-liked casino game Sic Bo. Chuck-A-Luck is more akin to carnival games than a casino game. Chuck-A-Luck is commonly played as fundraiser game in charity events.
The three dice, according to Chuck-A-Luck rules are placed in an hourglass-shaped wireframe birdcage. The birdcage spins around the middle, allowing the dealer to spin the birdcage end over end. The dice lands at the bottom of the birdcage when it stops spinning.
Bets can be placed on the possible combinations on the outcome of the thee dice. The possible bets according to Chuck-A-Luck rules are fewer than the available bets in Sic Bo, thus making the game much simpler and easier for beginners to learn.
The following are the type of bets that can be made in Chuck-A-Luck, a single dice bet is a wager that a specific number will be the outcome of the three dice. If the number appears once (out of the three dice) it pays 1 to 1. If the number appears twice, it pays 2 to 1. If the number appears thrice, it pays 10 to 1. Any Triple is a wager that all three dice will come out with same number, this pays 30 to 1. The actual number for Any Triple is irrelevant as long as all thee dice shows the same number, based on Chuck-A-Luck rules. Big is a bet that the total (or sum) of the three dice will be 11 or higher excluding triples, this pays 1 to 1. Small is a bet that the total (or sum) of the three dice will be 10 or lower excluding triples, this pays 1 to 1. Field is a wager that the total of the three dice will not be between the numbers eight and twelve, inclusive of eight and twelve. The Any Triple, Big, Field and Small wagers are not always offered.
Chuck-A-Luck rules are heavily in favour of the house. The players are expected to lose more money than they can win. The casino advantage on this game is higher than most casino games.
For a single number bet, at best the expected loss in terms of percentage is almost five percent. At worst, the expected loss in terms of percentage is almost at eight percent.
Some variant in Chuck-A-Luck rules include a variant of the Big Six wheel that is lightly based on chuck-a-luck. The variety of combinations of the three dice appear in the fifty-four slots on the spinning wheel. Because of the distribution of the combinations, the house edge for this Big Six wheel is even greater than for chuck-a-luck. Chuck-a-luck rules are fundamentally identical to the customary Vietnamese game Bau cua ca cop.
